7 Lessons from 2017 for 2018

This is my last article for 2017! I seriously cannot believe that it has been two months since I started this website!

These are what I have honestly learned, or even though I knew as a concept for sometime now, understood it from a first hand basis in the past year.

1. COST OF INVESTMENT

You can't continue to cling on to something just because you have invested so much time/energy/etc in it if there is no tangible return of investment from it. It's so simple, yet so negligible. So let this be a reminder.

2. IT'S NEVER TOO LATE

I used to think it was too late to get into this whole "fitness and exercise" thing because I was 25. 25. Well, guess what? I did my first ever bootcamp this year and I crushed it. This is coming from the girl who used every excuse in the book to get out of any and every P.E. period possible. But all that changed when I watched a video of this man. I mean, if he can, I can, right?

3. IF YOU CAN CHANGE YOUR MIND, YOU CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE

Which brings me to your mind. Seriously, it's all in your mind. Your mind shapes your attitude, and so, your results. It's so simple but it's so amazing. Just a little tweak up there, and suddenly, you are in control of so many things in your life. If you don't feel uncomfortable enough, you are spending too much time in your comfort zone anyway, and you are never going to grow if you spend the bulk of your time there.

4. THERE IS ALWAYS ROOM FOR MORE

Early this year, I was pouring soya sauce into a tablespoon, rather absentmindedly, when I realised I had poured out more than what I had always thought was about a tablespoon. I had been under measuring, despite using measuring spoons for quite some time now. Which led to this amazing insight about myself. I've been wrong about what I perceive as my "maximum" in a lot of areas of my life - and that's how I went from 25kg to 42kg in deadlifts. So push yourself, even when you think it's the maximum. (But be safe and wise about it of course)

5. YOU HAVE TO LEAP

You know the quote "What you seek, is seeking you"? Beautiful, and simultaneously, comforting right? But you can't sit doing nothing about what you want in life. Action creates results, be it good or bad. So if you do something and it works out, good for you! Get to your next step! If it didn't, learn your lessons from it and recalibrate. But like I said, doing nothing is not going to get you what you want. So do something, no matter how small. The key is to start.

6. YOU HAVE TO BE STILL TO BE ACTIVE

Having said about action, you still need to value stillness. I personally love meditation for helping me focus. Days where I mediate in the morning turn out to be my more productive and "action" oriented days. In fact, sometimes the most productive thing you can do is let your body or mind or both rest. It's all about the balance. Hustling is important, but so is taking a break. Figure out how and how often you want to tune out and make sure to incorporate it to your life.

7. HAPPINESS ISN'T A GOAL, IT'S A MINDSET

This is just too simple. I talked about happiness and fulfilment in this article. The bottom line is that, happiness is an emotion and a state, and that's not what you should be pursuing as your goal.

And those are my 7 lessons from 2017 that I look into sustaining in 2018! What is something that you have learned and would like to share? Leave it in the comments below, I would love to hear about it!

I don't know what's in store for me in the coming year, I don't have major plans such as moving, new jobs, etc. But, I'm excited. But for the past two months, this website has been my world and so it's here to stay. thendraluthaman.com is going to be a thing and I'm going to continue to write because it has brought me so much joy, a sense of purpose and fulfilment. Thank you to everyone who has been a part of this journey. I know it's only been 2 months, but I already have big plans and a vision for this space, so stay tuned!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
